The European Parliament has officially approved significant amendments to the EU regulation on asylum procedures, aimed at expediting the processing of protection requests. In a decisive vote, the Parliament designated Bangladesh, Colombia, Egypt, Kosovo, India, Morocco, and Tunisia as 'safe countries of origin.' This designation means that asylum applications from nationals of these countries will be processed under an accelerated procedure, allowing for quicker assessments of their claims.

What changed?
The amendments were passed with a majority supported by the European People's Party (EPP) and other right-leaning groups, with 483 votes in favor, 102 against, and 67 abstentions. The new rules also allow EU member states to conclude agreements with third countries to examine asylum applications on-site, a move aimed at streamlining the asylum process further.

Implications for asylum seekers
Under the new regulations, individual applicants will need to demonstrate that the accelerated assessment procedure should not apply to their case, citing a well-founded fear of persecution or serious harm if returned. The European Commission will monitor the situation in the listed countries and has the authority to propose their removal from the list if conditions change.

Member States' roles
Member States retain the ability to designate additional safe countries at the national level, provided they are not already removed from the EU list. Furthermore, the safe third-country concept can be applied to asylum seekers who are not citizens of the designated safe countries, making their EU protection claims inadmissible under certain conditions.

Next steps
The new regulations are expected to come into effect following formal adoption by the Council and publication in the Official Journal of the European Union. This legislative change marks a significant shift in the EU's approach to asylum procedures, reflecting ongoing debates about migration and border control within the bloc.
